A step by step guide to hook your readers

Before we begin, let me start this guide by asking this simple question to you. Do you read everything when you browse online?

Probably the answer is NO.

Life is busy, and in this busy life, people use social media as an escape from the monotonous routine. They are always in search of new and fresh content, but catching their attention with your content isn't an easy job.

500million

Over this much of tweets, people are posting every day on Twitter

So it's a no-brainer that riveting the attention of your potential readers is more challenging than ever. However, every successful author and your favorite creators online have strategies that keep you wanting more. Today, you'll learn some of those techniques. So tighten your seat belts and read on!

First thing first,

Define your customers ( readers)

Before you start writing, start answering these questions.

Who are my ideal customers/readers?

What matters to them?

What are their wants, needs and pains?

And be specific while answering these questions. Never try to write or build a solution for everyone. A person who doesn’t try to sell anyone outperforms a person who tries to sell everyone.

Voice and tone

When you write you must sound like a human, so people don’t think you are another ChatGPT bro. Write the way you speak. For god sake, never use words in your writing that you will never use in person. For example, if you don’t use moreover, furthermore when you speak then please don’t use them in your writing.

Trim, Trim, Trim

Cross out every word unless it serves your purpose. Often authors marry their first draft, they don’t feel like deleting unnecessary words or editing their draft because it sounds cool. But remember substance exists in brevity, not verbosity.

So edit as it costs you money

Check your spelling and grammar, punctuation marks

Breaking unnecessary grammatical mistakes can cause you trouble. People judge you by your writing because if you can’t write error-free content, can the rest of the work you do be trusted?

So before you publish your draft, double down and refine it. There are many tools available in the market that you can use, such as Grammarly, Hemingway. These tools can help you identify and correct grammatical mistakes, ensuring that your writing is clear and professional.

Seeds of curiosity

Curiosity is one of the biggest forces that can help you sell anything if used properly. Let me explain. You see, I just planted the seed of curiosity in your mind that makes you read further to get the answer to it.

You can do it at the end of your paragraph or sentence, like this:

  • Let me explain.

  • For example,

  • But there's more.

  • So read on.

  • But I didn't stop there.

  • Now, here comes the good part.

    However, don't overdo it.

Write short paragraphs and use bullet points

People don't read online; they scan. So the less you make them think, the more your content will stand out, and vice versa. In case you notice, all my sentences and paragraphs are short and easy to scan.

Use visuals

This quote couldn't be more relevant here, by David Ogilvy :

According to the study, only 20% of people read the content; the rest just scan it during an average visit.

Moreover, you can increase the readership and reach of your content by using visuals. Not only does it make your content more appealing, but it also prevents it from sounding like an encyclopedia.

Importance of asking for feedback

To make your readers take action, it's important to create a buying persona. You can simply do this by paying attention to their word choices and using the vocabulary they use in their feedback and reviews. Your customers' feedback is gold if you use it properly while crafting your content.

Structure

Lastly, the structure of your content is important. It's crucial to maintain a consistent flow throughout the content so your readers won't get lost. You can achieve this by defining your word count, outlining the table of contents, and writing subheads first.
